1998: Muskoka Outfitters is founded by Peter deMos

In October 1998 I opened my first location across from the post office in downtown Bracebridge. The first store was a mere 600 sq. ft., so I say "I" because the store was incredibly small. I was single at the time and there really wasn't any room or need for more staff.
Bracebridge residents found me though (I guess they were getting their mail) and I quickly began planning to expand. That December I met Kelly and I took another step closer to becoming a "We". Another milestone for us, and the internet was when we launched Muskokaoutfitters.com, as a source for news and information about our brand new store.

1999: Our First Expansion

After surviving our first winter in business we were on the move. In March Muskoka Outfitters relocated to 40 Manitoba St. opening for business on April 3rd. That winter was great for us and the area and for those who only experience Muskoka in the summer, I have to say you are really missing out. That year was also exciting for us as snowshoes quickly became our favourite pastime and has remained as a favourite since.
The new location doubled our size and greatly expanded our offerings and I was finally able to hire staff (and take a day off!). This year we received the Bracebridge Site enhancement award for our new shop and I received the honor of Young Entrepreneur of the year for Muskoka/Parry Sound.

2002: Move to 60 Manitoba Street

After 3 years we had really grown. We had expanded to include a highway location in Port Sydney to pursue the canoe and kayak division and were manufacturing canoes under the Appleseed brand. In February we relocated to our third shop down the street at 60 Manitoba and expanded our paddling section at the Bracebridge store.

2004: Port Carling Store

Our canoes and kayak sales are the center of our summer business. Our paddling shop moves to the locks in Port Carling and we start offering paddling instruction and day trips. Our fine tripping canoes are now branded "Muskoka Outfitters", available in 16' and 17'. Still today these canoes remain a great model for both the cottager and wilderness tripper.

2006: Riverside Location

This year had another big expansion in store. A very exciting move to what I think is the best possible location for anyone looking for the outdoors. The new shop offers 4000 sq. ft. of great outdoor gear, right on the water! We're now one location with everything you need in one spot. We can finally offer the largest selection of paddle sports offers on-site test paddling, rentals and instructional clinics. We literally offer access to the best sections of the Muskoka river, right from our front door! Plenty of parking and easy access so you can come by and get everything you need for your day of adventure and we're also a great source for tips on all the fun things to do in the area once you've gotten all your gear.
